Castanea dentata (American Chestnut)
Castanea dentata, also known as the American Chestnut, is a tall deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is best known for its delicious edible nuts and its majestic, spreading form. Once extensively found in the forests of the region, the American Chestnut population has declined due to a devastating blight. It has sharp, toothed leaves and produces long, spiky burrs containing multiple nuts. The tree can reach heights of up to 100 feet and has a wide spread.
